Caroline Dubois denied victory against Jessica Camara

Caroline Dubois denied victory against Jessica Camara

BIRTHDAY girl Caroline Dubois lost her perfect record despite dominating the only two rounds of this clash with Canada’s Jessica Camara.

The visitor was dropped in the first round and Dubois appeared to be on her way to a dominant win in what was her first fight since she was elevated to full lightweight champion by the WBC in December.

But an accidental head clash in the second round opened up a nasty cut above Camara’s left eye, which referee Kieran McCann deemed bad enough to stop the fight after consulting the ringside doctor. And, given the injury was sustained before the completion of four rounds, the fight ended in a technical draw.

It had been one-way traffic until that point and Camara was already badly marked up from Dubois’ punches before the clash of heads. But despite her dominance, Dubois was denied a victory in the first defence of her title.

Of course Dubois, who turned 24 today, still retains the belt due to the draw but her record now stands at 10-0-1 (5).

Dubois is now hoping to book a spot on the all-women’s card at the Royal Albert Hall on March 7, with Terri Harper a potential opponent.

On the Camara draw, Dubois said: “I don’t think she wanted it. I knocked her down in the first round with a straight right.

“Obviously the cut, the blood wasn’t going down her face, it was coming round the side of her face. It was bleeding down, she didn’t want it, man.

“Either it was getting stopped by the doctor or I was stopping it. I wish Jessica well, there’s no bad blood. I wish her the best and I hope she has a safe flight home.”
