CARL FROCH, one of the British boxing’s leading stars, looks set for retirement after the WBA stripped the Nottingham man of his remaining world title. Froch hasn’t fought since his memorable victory over George Groves at Wembley Stadium, almost a year ago now.
“It’s fair enough from the WBA,” his promoter Eddie Hearn said. “He’s got no fight planned, no fight scheduled. You can’t just hold on to a belt. They want to make their money, to get their sanctioning fees.”
The domestic scene at super-middleweight remains vibrant. James DeGale travels to Boston to fight Andre Dirrell for the IBF crown on May 23, while Groves is next in line to challenge new WBC champion Badou Jack. It seems likely though that victory for either would tempt Carl Froch back to the ring.
“As time passes I think it’ll become increasingly unlikely that Carl Froch will fight again,” Hearn added.
