Carl Froch says one man would have ended Joe Calzaghe’s unbeaten record

Joe Calzaghe has been heralded for his undefeated record since retirement, but super-middleweight rival Carl Froch believes that one of his former opponents could have put a stop to the Welshman’s unbeaten run, if they collided in their primes.

Calzaghe and Froch were linked to one another for years but ‘The Italian Dragon’ instead opted to move up to light-heavyweight, where he would twice fight in America.

Up at 175lbs, Calzaghe kept his ‘0’ intact, overcoming both Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr to end his career with wins over two boxing legends, but Froch believes that another American fighter would have gotten the better of the Brit.

On his YouTube channel, ‘The Cobra’ named the 168lb superstar whom he believes would have bested Calzaghe, admitting that he cannot see how Andre Ward loses that fight when speaking with the 41-year-old Californian.

“I always thought what would happen in a fight with you and Calzaghe and I did a little short on it and it was close, but I had you winning because I don’t see how you lose. I can’t see you losing. How do you think you would have got on?”

In response, ‘Son of God’ also declared his belief that victory would be achieved, before recognising how difficult a fight with the Newbridge-born southpaw would be.

“Of course, I believe I win, I have to think like that as a competitor. I think that I would find a way and figure it out but that would be a tough fight for me. It’s because of all the stuff you know about Joe; the speed, the punch count and that toughness, and he would come in tip-top shape.

“It would be a very, very tough fight for both of us and that’s a toss-up fight.”

Like Calzaghe, Ward also retired without suffering a defeat, with his 2011 win over Froch considered to be one of his best displays in the ring.
