‘Most people want to see Canelo-Golovkin. But he must beat Chavez Jr first’

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman on the significance of Canelo-Chavez. And hopes for Canelo-Golovkin have not been extinguished

THE WBC had tried to pave the way for Canelo Alvarez to fight Gennady Golovkin. So far that showdown has been put off. But the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman hopes to see that super-fight take place eventually.

Speaking to Boxing News in Las Vegas, Sulaiman explained, “It was a long process. It goes back to [Sergio] ‘Maravilla’ Martinez, Miguel Cotto. Golovkin comes into the picture as the mandatory by winning the Interim title and he accepted Cotto to fight Canelo and then Canelo to fight Khan. It was a long process and all the rules and paper trail is clear. Then Canelo decided to relinquish the title. That’s his decision. The fight that most people want to see is Canelo-Golovkin. Now he’s got to beat Chavez first.”

“Golovkin is the WBC champion, if he fights Canelo it will be for the WBC title,” he notes.

But he considers Canelo-Chavez a significant event in itself, “It’s a huge fight making a sports event overshadow the world commotion of North Korea, of bombs, of walls. People around the world, the whole country will be watching the fight with hope and enthusiasm. To see a sporting event with two Mexicans, that’s a great statement and that’s what boxing does. Last week 90,000 at Wembley Stadium [for example],” he said. “We’re going through a great moment in boxing and we have to celebrate and work forward.”
