THE world has been waiting to see Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin fight. That has now been confirmed for September 16. But the Canelo vs GGG venue remains undecided.
Golden Boy promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, who represents Canelo, revealed that offers are coming in. “I’ve already had several calls from around the world wanting to stage this fight. I literally had a missed call from Dubai, I had a missed call from the UK where Anthony Joshua and [Wladimir] Klitschko just sold out [with] 90,000 people. There’s interest all over the world, there’s interest from everywhere and those negotiations where to hold this fight will start very soon because this fight is September 16 and let me just tell you that Tom Loeffler [Golovkin’s promoter] and his team is an amazing team, it’s going to be a lot fun putting all this together until fight night,” he said.
Las Vegas is typically the favoured location for fights of this nature. It’s hard to see how Canelo-Golovkin could fetch up at Wembley Stadium. It would have to take place at a good time for US television, very late at night or very early in the morning in the UK, and it’s unlikely Transport for London would permit it. Despite often being rumoured we’re yet to see a big fight end up in Dubai. But Joshua-Klitschko has kindled an interest in staging big stadium events.
De La Hoya continued, “Boxing was in a hiatus. With these fights that you saw [Saturday], that you’re going to see in September, that you saw with Anthony Joshua, future fights that are going to take place, boxing is back, bigger and better than ever. It’s like basketball when they lost Kobe, it’s like any other sport. You have you’re ups and downs, boxing always has its ups and downs. Right now we are living a great moment in the sport of boxing and we’re going to continue it for a long time.”
