Canelo Alvarez has suffered two career defeats within the last four-and-a-half years, losing to both Dmitry Bivol and Terence Crawford.
Now, Alvarez has revealed which man he would prefer to rematch before hanging up the gloves.
Canelo first suffered defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr back in 2013, but the Mexican superstar would recover from that loss and go on to become a four-division world champion and the pound-for-pound king of the sport in the years followed.
It was not until 2022 that Canelo was trumped for a second time, when a move up to the light-heavyweight division backfired and he was outpointed by Dmitry Bivol, who went on to emerge as a pound-for-pound star himself.
Then, after becoming a two-time undisputed super-middleweight world champion, Canelo lost all four of his 168lb belts to Crawford last September, with that legacy-defining win seeing Crawford retire during the aftermath – shunning a lucrative second encounter with Alvarez.
Speaking to DAZN Boxing, Canelo revealed that he would prefer the opportunity to rematch Crawford than Bivol, believing that the defeat hurts him more because it was his most recent shortcoming.
“I think that Crawford, right now, is the fight that I want right now because it [the loss] was recent, so that is why.”
Canelo makes his ring return on Saturday in a first outing since defeat to Crawford, ending a career-longest 13-month spell of inactivity as he challenges for Christian Mbilli’s WBC super-middleweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
