CANELO ALVAREZ’S trainer Eddy Reynoso hopes his fighter can get revenge over Amir Khan for the Englishman’s 2009 victory over Marco Antonio Barrera.

Six months after being bombed by the unheralded Breidis Prescott, Khan was matched with Barrera. That showdown win or bust for both fighters: Khan’s reputation was in tatters following his defeat and Barrera was clinging on to the remnants of a great career.

A clash of heads in the opening round left Barrera with a gaping wound that would worsen as the fight wore on. After five rounds the contest was stopped as a consequence of the injury and Khan – who had controlled the action – won a technical decision.

“Definitely, it did hurt, it did hurt, because Marco is one of the top names in Mexican boxing, and at the moment he was still at one of the top levels,” Reynoso remembered. “That’s when we realised who Amir Khan was after that victory. I think after Saturday night, it would give that ingredient to the fans, that satisfaction back.”

All that said, Reynoso has admiration for British fighters.

“It’s a very great school of boxing. A lot of courage, very strong, very valiant fighters. They’re courageous, and always going forward.”
