CANELO ALVAREZ seized the WBA ‘regular’ super-middleweight title and dispatched Britain’s Rocky Fielding without mercy inside three rounds, doing the damage with brutal hooks to the body.

“That’s what we planned. We knew he had that weakness to be susceptible to body shots and each one that landed I felt like that hurt him and that’s what we did,” Alvarez reflected. He hurt him.

“That was the plan we had to work the body and he committed the error by beginning to exchange with me. That’s what we worked on, to work hard to the body and thank God everything went well,” the Mexican continued.

It was Canelo’s first fight at 168lbs and, after that performance, now seemingly Alvarez can fight at both middleweight and super-middle. “We don’t know [about staying at 168lbs]. Right now we’re going to enjoy our victory and then we’ll sit down and then we’ll see what’s going to happen after,” he said. “I’m just happy to be making history.”

He added, “I feel good at 160lbs and it’s normal, it’s always a sacrifice and it’s normal to sacrifice to make weight but I still feel good being able to make 160lbs.”

This was also Alvarez’s first fight in New York city, selling out Madison Square Garden with an official attendance of 20,112.

“I’m happy to be here and I hope it’s not the last time I’m here, I hope it’s the first of many so I’m happy and I’m thankful to all the people who came to see me. It’s hard to describe this but it’s an honour to be here and share it with all the people,” Canelo said.

There is also interest in him boxing back in his homeland, sooner rather than later. “Wherever it is and whenever it is in Mexico, it’s always an honour and fills me with proud,” he said.

“We have to sit and talk about it but it always fills me with honour and pride to be able to fight in Mexico.”
