Canelo Alvarez and William Scull throw only 445 punches combined, breaking CompuBox record

CANELO Alvarez and William Scull have set a new, rather undesirable, CompuBox record after throwing the fewest combined punches in a 12-round contest.

Throughout the boxing data provider’s 40-year history, no two fighters have delivered a less inspiring punch output within the 36-minute duration.

CORRECTION:
FEWEST COMBINED PUNCHES THROWN IN A 12-ROUND FIGHT (NOT LANDED)
445- Canelo (152) Scull (293)
459- Wilder (204) Parker (255)
473- Ibragimov (245) Briggs (228)
490- Garcia (210) Romero (280)
499- Haney (214) Garcia (285)

With the pair amassing a measly 445 shots in total, it is no wonder that two judges struggled to select a deserved winner, though one lopsided scorecard of 119-109 ultimately cemented Canelo’s unanimous decision victory.

Not only were an obscenely low number of shots thrown, but the two fighters landed, on average, around five blows in each round.

In fact, Scull, 23-1 (9 KOs), kept to single digits in all of the 12 frames, while Canelo, 63-2-2 (39 KOs), only connected with double-digit shots – 10, as it happened – in the final three minutes.

The Mexican also came second, sitting behind Devis Boschiero, for the fewest number of shots (152) landed by an individual fighter in a 12-round bout, according to CompuBox once again.

In any case, the 34-year-old did just enough to reclaim his undisputed super-middleweight crown and, in turn, set up a blockbuster showdown with Terence Crawford on September 12.

Scull, meanwhile, produced a largely negative performance, with his lack of a willingness to engage only forcing his opponent to work twice as hard for each opening.

At the same time, though, it could also be said that Canelo’s display, and indeed his past few fights, has not exactly filled his loyal fans with confidence.

If anything, more people will likely be picking Crawford, the naturally smaller man, to do the business at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas.
