CALLUM SMITH has to resist the temptation to dwell on the George Groves-Chris Eubank Jr world title fight on Saturday (February 17) and the possibility that he will be in line to fight the winner. Smith is in training for his February 24 clash with Juergen Braehmer in the other World Boxing Super Series semi-final. The winner of that fight will meet the Groves-Eubank victor June 2 at the O2 arena in London.
Smith gave his prediction to Boxing News. “I think it’s probably Groves points but I wouldn’t like to bet on it. I think it’s a good 50-50,” he said.
Smith explained, “Groves is the bigger man. I think he’s got better boxing ability, technically, at distance. It’s just there’s stamina issues he’s shown in the past and anything like that, then the last person you want to be in the ring with is someone like Chris Eubank with his workrate and punch output. If Groves tires, then it’s Chris Eubank’s fight late on. But the size and every fight starts at range and I think Groves is the better boxer at range. It’s how long he can do it for. If he paces it well and Eubank can’t cut the distance down, then I think Groves takes it on points. But he might have a few rocky points towards the end.
“I’d say Groves is the better boxer, Eubank’s the better fighter. It’s just whoever’s tactics come off right on the night.”
