Kell Brook has shared the ring with many great fighters, but Gennady Golovkin and Terence Crawford are the two standout names on his record, being two of the three men to have defeated the Brit, and now ‘Special K’ has named which man was superior.
After winning the IBF welterweight world title and making three title defences, Brook made the daring jump up to middleweight to take on unified middleweight ruler Golovkin in a battle between two undefeated world champions.
Brook started the contest well, but the much-lauded punch power of the Kazakh knockout artist proved to be the difference when he fractured the South-Yorkshireman’s eye socket, resulting in a fifth-round stoppage win for ‘Triple G’.
Upon his return to welterweight, Brook lost his IBF title to Errol Spence Jr, but he attempted to reclaim 147lb honours in what turned out to be his penultimate bout, challenging for Crawford’s WBO belt.
Crawford dispatched of his rival after four rounds of action to extend his undefeated record to 37-0, and Brook told The Stomping Ground, that the American is the best opponent that he faced in the ring.
“[Golovkin wasn’t the best], Crawford is the best [that I have faced]. Crawford is just precision, he is like a surgeon.
“His timing and how he can just switch, is like a surgeon, punch perfect. He is like Ronnie O’Sullivan at snooker, he can switch perfectly.”
After defeating Brook, Crawford would go on to become undisputed welterweight champion, before ending his career after another undisputed triumph, defeating super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez as the Omaha-native retired with a perfect 42-0 record.
As for Brook, he has recently been linked to a comeback to the sport, mentioned as a potential opponent for Chris Eubank Jr.
