AN INJURY to Rocky Fielding has arguably contributed to a more appetising main event in Legos, Nigeria, where Brandon Glanton appears set to square off against Marcus Browne.
It was originally announced that Glanton vs Fielding would headline an Amir Khan co-promoted show on October 1, topping a bill that includes the likes of former world champion Richard Commey and Dan Azeez.
Yet now, it would seem that Browne, 25-2 (16 KOs), a former light-heavyweight world title challenger, has shoehorned himself into a position to face cruiserweight contender Glanton, 20-3 (17 KOs).
The 34-year-old is perhaps best known for his encounter with Badou Jack, which swiftly became a brutal bloodbath after a horrific cut appeared on his opponent’s forehead.
Nevertheless, Browne came away with an impressive unanimous decision victory in 2019, only to then lose a technical decision against Jean Pascal – who later tested positive for banned substances – before suffering a ninth-round stoppage defeat to Artur Beterbiev.
The slick southpaw, however, remains a tricky customer for the majority of fighters, not least an operator on the level of Glanton.
“Bout to beat the breaks off this b****,” Browne posted on X yesterday, responding to speculation of their potential fight.
Given his equally belligerent attitude, it can only be assumed that Glanton – should he, indeed, face Browne – is likely to approach their fight with no small amount of hostility, either.
Having previously lost razor-thin decisions against David Light and Soslan Asbarov, ‘Bulletproof’ then gave a strong account of himself against Chris Billam-Smith in April.
A more measured performance ultimately saw former world champion Billam-Smith claim a unanimous decision victory, though, with Glanton still yet to prove his credentials at the top level.
Browne, meanwhile, has amassed just one 10-round points victory – against club-level fighter Adrian Taylor – at 200lbs, yet the dominant nature of his last outing would suggest that he has plenty more to offer.
