WELTERWEIGHT contender Bradley Skeete hopes to fight Sam Eggington for his British title by the end of the year, but must first defend his own WBO European strap on September 26.
He takes on Mark Thompson at Wembley Arena on the undercard of Frank Buglioni’s challenge for Fedor Chudinov’s world super-middleweight title.
Skeete, who unsuccessfully challenged Frankie Gavin last year for the British and Commonwealth titles in his only loss, hopes to fight current champion Eggington this year.
“I’ve always wanted to be British champion and I came up short against Frankie Gavin but I’d like to win it outright and move on,” he told Boxing News.
“If the fight with Eggington can get made, I can’t see why we won’t fight.”
The fighters operate under rival promoters however with Skeets signed with Frank Warren and Eggington with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, meaning they box on separate brodacasters – BoxNation and Sky Sports respectively.
Such obstacles make the fight unlikely to happen, but Skeete has plans to overcome these issues.
“It’s going to be hard to make, we’re with different promoters but there’s no reason I can’t be made mandatory,” he said.
“I was mandatory for the Gavin fight. There’s no one in front of me really so there’s no reason why I can’t be made mandatory and get that fight made.”
While he would also like to challenge Gianluca Branco for his European strap, Skeete maintains he is not overlooking Thompson, who has predominantly boxed at light-middleweight.
“He’s not really boxed at welterweight so I’m hoping he can get down and perform. He’s a tough guy and a good opponent for me, but I should be beating him and moving on to where I want to be,” he noted.
