  1. Tillery kicking match (Oct 1991)

As the fighters exchanged after the bell Elijah Tillery kicked Riddick Bowe three times. They wrestled and grappled before Bowe’s manager, Rock Newman, reached over the ropes and hauled Tillery out the ring.

  1. Golota goes low (July and Dec 1996)

Andrew Golota was on his way to springing upsets in both fights against talented New Yorker Riddick Bowe. But Golota couldn’t resist fouling up and squandered both fights.

  1. The Porthcawl ring riot (Aug 1960)

Dick Richardson had beaten Brian London on a cut and the ring was filled with people. “Blows were struck and someone went down. And this was the signal for a free-for-all all in wrestling battle royal,” said Boxing News.

  1. Hopkins throws down the Puerto Rican flag (Jul 2001)

Not even the steely Bernard Hopkins felt safe when fans of Felix Trinidad chased him out of a stadium following a press conference.

  1. Artie Town flattens Peter Mueller (Sep 1955)

Mueller was well behind and had been warned for several infractions. After a further warning, Towne smashed a right into Mueller’s neck and “laid him out”. Towne was disqualified, though the result later changed to a no contest.

  1. Judah throws the stool (Nov 2001)

Zab Judah, believing he could have continued after being floored by a Kostya Tszyu right hand and with the fight over in the second, picks up his stool and launches it toward referee Jay Nady.

  1. Fireman Jim Flynn keeps headbutting Jack Johnson (Jul 1912)

Flynn was only warned for continually leaping in head first in embarrassingly crude attempts to split the champion open. The sheriff finally climbed in to stop the fight in the ninth in Johnson’s favour.

  1. Tony Wilson’s mum gets physical (Sep 1998)

Wilson and Southampton’s Steve McCarthy were going at it when Tony’s mother entered the ring, stiletto in hand and began bashing McCarthy. She drew blood and McCarthy left the ring, refusing to return, and lost the fight.

  1. Sucker-punch (Nov 2001)

James Butler had been outpointed over 10 rounds by Richard Grant. As the winner went to embrace Butler, the loser cocked his ungloved fist and smashed him in the face. Butler was arrested, convicted and jailed. That in 2001. In 2004 he was also sent to prison, sentenced for murder.

  1. The bite (Jun 1997)

The world watched in horror as Mike Tyson spat out his mouthpiece and twice dined on Evander Holyfield’s ears. It was utter madness.
