WBC cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis defended his world title against Mike Perez on Saturday (September 30). Fighting at the packed Arena Riga in Riga Breidis came through a scrappy clash with the Cork-based Cuban, prevailing by unanimous decision.
Breidis won 116-110 for Fernando Barbosa, 115-111 for Juan Carlos Payano and 114-112 for Fabian Guggenheim.
This was a cruiserweight quarter-final in the World Boxing Super Series. Briedis victory books him in for a daunting semi-final against Oleksandr Usyk. This will be a unification for the WBO and WBC world crowns. Usyk defeated common opponent Marco Huck in his quarter-final.
World Boxing Super Series fights are coming thick and fast. At super-middleweight Chris Eubank Jr boxes Avni Yildirim on October 7 in Stuttgart and the following week George Groves defends his WBA super-middleweight title against Jamie Cox in London.
