CANELO ALVAREZ vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was not the all out all-Mexican brawl many anticipated it to be. It was too civil a war in fact.

Canelo began the fight in control and never relinquished that dominance. He smashed right hooks into Chavez Jr’s body initially and hurt him with countering crosses, knocking him to the side at times.

Chavez absorbed that punishment but never seemed to make the most of his size and weight advantages. Through most of the rounds he backed off, content to take the punches and offering little in the way of reply. Occasionally Canelo rested on the ropes and all too tentatively Chavez let some shots go before Alvarez reasserted himself and drove him back.

Canelo was unable to put Chavez away, as Junior absorbed the punishment, but Alvarez emerged a unanimous victor, 120-108.

The real excitement came when Gennady Golovkin joined Canelo in the ring to announce their Septer 16 mega-fight. Read more HERE.
