Boxing News honoured at British Sports Journalism Awards

BOXING NEWS was a winner at the highly prestigious British Sports Journalism Awards in London on Monday. The ‘100 Greatest British Boxers’ supplement won the prize for best Special Sports Edition 2017.

Boxing News came through from a strong shortlist, including entries from national newspapers the Daily Mirror, the Independent, the Sun and the Telegraph as well as Rugby World magazine. The judges at the Sports Journalists’ Association said, “The winning entry however was one all about research, knowledge and soul-searching [in] what the judges called the ‘ultimate independent assessment.’”

Receiving the award, in his acceptance speech editor Matt Christie paid tribute to the memory of Scott Westgarth, who died after winning his contest on Saturday.

Boxing News in fact defended the title it won in the same category last year, when the Muhammad Ali tribute issue of the magazine also received the award for best Special Sports Edition 2016.

“It was a stunning result,” Matt said, “when you consider the might and resources of those we were up against, and a real honour to get some recognition, from the highest possible place, for the tireless and excellent work we put in.”

Matt also received another personal accolade. The Boxing News editor was Highly Commended in the Specialist Sports Correspondent category alongside Vikki Orvice from The Sun. The award, which also featured nominees from the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and The Telegraph, was won by The Guardian and Observer’s Sean Ingle.

It was a good night for boxing in other categories, BBC Radio 5 Live won Radio Sports Live Broadcast of the Year for their coverage of Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko, photographer Lawrence Lustig was highly commended in Specialist Sports Portfolio and the Guardian’s Donald McRae was 2017 Sports Feature Writer of the Year.
