Boxing News dominates at the BWAA Awards

A testament to the high standards and fearless leadership of its Editor Matt Christie, Boxing News, the world’s oldest boxing magazine, dominated this year’s Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Awards, winning four of the six awards and securing one Second-Place finish and two Third-Place finishes.

Up against the best writers and publications in the sport today, there were big wins for Elliot Worsell, Thomas Hauser, Jack Hirsch, Matt Christie, and Oliver Fennell, as well as an honourable mention for regular BN contributor Lewis Watson.

Worsell, two years ago awarded First Place in the Boxing Investigative Reporting category, this time scored First Place finishes in the following three categories: Boxing Event Coverage, Boxing Feature (over 1,500 words), and Boxing Feature (under 1,500 words).

He also placed second in the Boxing Investigative Reporting category for his piece, I Am the Referee: An Investigation of the British Boxing Board of Control’s Process for Appointing New Referees.

His three winning features can be read here:

Boxing Event Coverage: Work of Genius: Masterful Terence Crawford Shows Us That in Las Vegas Even ‘The Truth’ is Not the Truth

Boxing Feature (over 1,500 words): The Intervention: Froch vs. Groves, 10 Years On

Boxing Feature (under 1,500 words): How to Lose: There are Many Ways to Lose in Boxing and Sometimes Losing Feels Like Winning

Meanwhile, Thomas Hauser, one of the sport’s preeminent and most experienced writers, received a First-Place honour in the category of Boxing Investigative Reporting, a deserved acknowledgement for his admirable efforts to get to the bottom of the recent Conor Benn performance-enhancing drug story.

His winning feature can be read here:

Boxing Investigative Reporting: A 50-Point Primer on Boxing and Performance Enhancing Drugs

In the Boxing Feature (over 1,500 words) category, Jack Hirsch received a Second Place finish for his feature, Ultimate Survivor: Don Elbaum and the story of two left gloves gifted to the greatest fighter in the world.

Finally, in the Boxing News Story category, Matt Christie bagged Third Place for his moving piece, A Man of Great and Rare Integrity, and Oliver Fennell secured Third Place in the Boxing Investigative Reporting category for his feature, Man in the Middle: Ian John-Lewis Reflects in His Career as the Third Man in the Ring.
