EDGAR Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz set the stage alight at last night’s New York press conference, promising a brutal showdown at super-middleweight on July 12 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Sheeraz, 25, steps up from middleweight after a stellar three-year run, culminating in a European title win over Tyler Denny last September. His WBC title challenge against Carlos Adames ended in a controversial draw, with many believing the Brit was fortunate. Now, under new trainer Andy Lee, Sheeraz aims to make a statement in his 168lbs debut.
Berlanga, the New York-born Puerto Rican, is no stranger to the spotlight. A former world title challenger, he’s known for his ferocious style and unrelenting confidence. The 27-year-old dismissed Sheeraz’s credentials, vowing to dominate in his hometown.
“You already know what time it is. I’m knocking this motherf***er out,” Berlanga roared. “He said we’re overlooking him, but I don’t overlook any fighter. You’re in NYC, the lion’s den. We’re looking to hurt him. I’m going to break every bone in this guy’s face and do what I do best: put on a show.”
Berlanga, 23-1 (18 KOs), didn’t hold back, branding Sheeraz, 21-0-1 (17 KOs), predictable. “He’s a basic fighter,” he said. “I’ve been boxing since I was six. What he brings, I’ve already seen. He’s trained by Andy Lee? I messed up the last fighter, and now I’ll mess up this one.”
Sheeraz, unbeaten in 22 fights and typically reserved, fired back, embracing the underdog role. “I’m coming, and I’m coming for everything,” he vowed. “For the first time, I’m being underestimated. I get it; you’re only as good as your last performance. On July 12, when I get the win, the Hamzah Sheeraz hype train will be back on.”
With both men known for explosive, offensive styles, this high-stakes clash could end early. Sheeraz predicted: “I’ve learned a lot since my last fight. I’m going to throw a few jabs, land a right hand on the chin, and knock him the f*** out. But if it goes 12 rounds, it’ll be explosive.”
