Tony Sims has considered the fighting future of Conor Benn after watching his man suffer a second-round stoppage defeat to Ryan Garcia.
The pair squared off in Las Vegas earlier this month, with Garcia defending the WBC world title he acquired by dethroning Mario Barrios in February.
Prior to that, the American lost a unanimous decision to Rolando Romero – and suffered a second-round knockdown – while returning from a year-long doping ban.
Since then, though, Garcia appears to have discovered some form and is now coming off arguably a career-best performance against Benn, who he floored with a crushing right hand and ultimately stopped in round two.
As a result, many believe ‘The Destroyer’ was exposed as an imposter at world level, given the glaring disparity in speed and skill between him and Garcia.
Some have even suggested that retirement would not be such a bad idea, as Benn has surely reached a position where he no longer needs to fight for a living.
Speaking with Ring Magazine, however, head coach Sims offered his personal view that the 29-year-old is likely to resume his career.
“I think he will [fight again]. He won’t want to go out like that [coming off a stoppage defeat].
“He needs to have a bit of a rest, regroup, and then see what he’s going to do next.”
When asked about a move up from 147lbs, Sims admitted that Benn is undersized at middleweight while, in that same breath, highlighting his triumph over Chris Eubank Jr as a career-best performance.
It was, indeed, at 160lbs when the pair squared off last year, with Eubank winning their first encounter before Benn exacted his revenge in an immediate rematch.
