Lennox Lewis is hailed by many as Britain’s best ever fighter, but there is one man whose resume equals that of ‘The Lion’, in the eyes of former WBC cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew.
Lewis defeated every fighter that he faced, avenging his two career defeats to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman with stoppage wins and overcoming the likes of Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Vitali Klitschko during his legendary career.
Others argue that super-middleweight legend Joe Calzaghe is the best Brit to ever lace up the gloves, having retired with an undefeated 46-fight record and trumped names such as Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
Yet, on the Fight Your Corner Podcast, Bellew declared that Calzaghe’s rival, Carl Froch, is the only Briton who has a resume as impressive as Lewis’.
“His [Froch’s] resume is out of this world. Carl has got a better resume than – and people won’t like this – but Carl has got a better resume than Naseem Hamed, and I am Naz’s biggest fan by the way.”
“I think that the only person whose resume stacks as much as Carl’s is probably Lennox Lewis. Carl has got a better resume than Joe Calzaghe, he has. I don’t think that he would have beaten Joe Calzaghe, but he has got a better resume than him.”
“Carl’s career, on paper, is better than Joe Calzaghe’s.”
Froch competed in an insanely competitive super-middleweight division and became a four-time world champion, boasting wins over Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Jean Pascal and Jermain Taylor.
He retired from the sport following his last win in 2014, when he claimed a memorable knockout over George Groves in their historic battle at Wembley Stadium.
