BEK ‘The Bully’ Melikuziev and Darius Fulghum lit up Las Vegas by producing a wildly exciting battle last night. The scrap was fitting of a world title eliminator as both men refused to lose.
Unfortunately for Fulghum, he suffered a first career defeat, as Melikuziev’s power told in the final round, forcing a late knockdown. Despite Fulghum’s efforts, it felt like Melikuziev had his nose in front for most of the bout. Judges Tim Cheatham, David Sutherland and Steve Weisfeld all totalled 114-112 for Bek, who had a point deducted for holding in round seven.
Further shaking off the damage done by a shock 2021 KO loss to Gabe Rosado, the winner improved his record to 16-1 (10 KOs) while Fulghum fell to 14-1 (12 KOs). While ‘DFG’ showed more than enough to suggest he can come again at this level, Melikuziev marches on as WBA super-middleweight mandatory challenger.
Canelo is the established undisputed champion, while Caleb Plant (who fights later this evening) holds the Interim strap at 168. Back in the Virgin Hotels ring and the more seasoned Melikuziev set the early pace, landing his signature left hand as Fulghum acclimatised to the step-up in class.
Boxing patiently for the first third, Fulghum increased the tempo and began to find little openings around the middle rounds. Referee Thomas Taylor deducted a point from Melikuziev in round seven, offering the well-supported Fulghum further glimmers of hope.
For the most part, Melikuziev’s sharper shots gave him the edge. A combination from down below that ended up top sent Fulghum flailing to the ropes for a count in the final round.
The Houston man’s career will benefit from this 12-round experience. Melikuziev, meanwhile, will be keeping a close eye on Plant as a realistic next foe rather than Canelo.
