Barry McGuigan: ‘Carl Frampton’s got the valid title, not Scott Quigg’

Barry McGuigan: ‘Carl Frampton’s got the valid title, not Scott Quigg’

WHAT went wrong with making the Scott Quigg fight?

Quigg felt he deserved 50-50… Effectively it was a voluntary defence [of the IBF title] and he wants us to fight in Manchester, [near] his hometown. In a voluntary defence the challenger gets what the champion decides to pay him and even in a purse bid for a mandatory defence, it’s 75-25. So we weren’t going to do that. We were starting at 70-30 but the least we would take would be 60-40. We’ve got the gravitas, Carl’s got the valid title, he’s a headline act.

Such is life, we’ve gone on and signed a deal with Al and I don’t know whether it’s possible to revisit the stuff with Quigg, if he gets through Kiko Martinez. That’s a very tough fight for him, Kiko’s a hard puncher – he might be damaged psychologically by Carl but I doubt it.
If everything goes well we’ll get Santa Cruz next summer, or even before. We will then consider moving up to featherweight, possibly super-feather.
