Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has worked with some of boxing’s best, promoting the likes of Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao during his time in the sport, and now there is a member of Arum’s current stable that he believes could go on to be one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Arum promoted 27 of Muhammad Ali’s 61 career bouts, working with ‘The Greatest’ from his fight with George Chuvalo in 1966, up until his final win against Leon Spinks in 1978, when he became boxing’s first three-time heavyweight world champion.
Having worked in the boxing industry for over 60 years, Arum undeniably has an eye for talent and even to this day, the 94-year-old is the promoter of three active world champions – Xander Zayas, Bruce Carrington and Abdullah Mason – many former titlists and a number of up and comers.
When discussing his fighters in an interview with DAZN – Top Rank’s new broadcast partner – Arum labelled former WBO lightweight ruler Keyshawn Davis as a fighter that can become one of the greats.
“Keyshawn Davis is one of these young men that has a tremendous amount of skill. If he can control his life and harness those skills, he will be one of the great fighters of all time.”
The enigmatic Davis was stripped of his lightweight title when he missed weight ahead of an attempted first defence against Edwin De Los Santos last year. ‘The Businessman’ has since returned to action in the super-lightweight division, where he scored a dramatic late knockout over Jamaine Ortiz in January after largely dominating proceedings.
Despite having just one fight at 140lbs, Davis’ future may lie at the welterweight scene, after the undefeated Norfolk contender revealed that he is close to securing a ‘championship fight’ up at 147lbs. He has made it clear he is targetting Devin Haney, however that is not understood to be next.
