Anthony Cacace set to collide with Leigh Wood after vacating IBF title

Anthony Cacace set to collide with Leigh Wood after vacating IBF title
Anthony Cacace (Mark Robinson/Matchroom).

RUMOURS of Anthony Cacace’s next outing have been circulating after the Irishman decided to vacate his IBF super-featherweight strap last week.

The 36-year-old produced a punishing performance to dethrone Joe Cordina last year, claiming his red and gold belt with a stunning eighth-round stoppage victory.

After that, Cacace, 23-1 (8 KOs), defended his IBO title against former world featherweight champion Josh Warrington, imposing his size to secure a wide unanimous decision win.

But instead of facing hard-hitting IBF mandatory challenger Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez, ‘Anto’ took to social media on Friday to declare that he will now chase the biggest fights possible.

One fighter he has been heavily linked with is Leigh Wood, who has not fought since his seventh-round stoppage victory over Warrington back in 2023.

Nevertheless, ‘Leigh-thal’ has been involved in some of British boxing’s most memorable fights in recent years, with his performance against Michael Conlan remaining at the forefront of everyone’s minds.

In that particular showdown, Wood, 28-3 (17 KOs), emerged from the jaws of defeat to halt Conlan with an awe-inspiring 12th-round finish.

And despite falling short against dangerous Mexican contender Mauricio Lara in his following outing, the Brit immediately avenged his loss with a more measured display through 12 rounds.

But now, with Cacace having vacated his IBF belt – while also keeping hold of his IBO trinket – it would appear that the pair are set to lock horns later this year.

While an official announcement is yet to surface, Irish News has reported that they will square off in Wood’s home city of Nottingham, England, on May 10.
