BOXING has a new world champion and she’s a record breaker too. While Mexico’s Camila Zamorano has already proved her prowess between the ropes, it was a title vacation elsewhere that prompted her elevation from WBC Interim atomweight holder to full world champion, the youngest ever to hold such a prestigious title.
As explained in the tweet above, Germany’s undisputed queen, Tina Rupprecht, dropped all four of her belts after retiring aged 33, allowing Zamorano to scoop up the WBC. Rupprecht exits with a 15-1-1 (3 KOs) record, with her only defeat coming to Seniesa Estrada.
That 2023 bout was a double-title unification, in which Rupprecht lost her WBC belt and dropped down to the diminutive 102-pound weight class, where she cleaned up. In April, she won a tight majority decision over Sumire Yamanaka in Potsdam. ‘Tiny’ Tina hangs up the gloves as a two-weight world champion.
Rupprecht leaves the likes of former Eri Matsuda, Esneidy Rodriguez Olmos and Yamanaka to fight things out in her absence. Fledgling pugilist Zamorano is also in that mix. Sporting a 12-0 (1 KO) record, Camila won her Interim title, beating 42-year-old Japanese Mika Iwakawa on points in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Prior to that, she defeated Filipino Norj Guro to win the WBC International title. Moving on to fight for the temporary world title, the Iwakawa victory has now gone up a level. Elevating ‘Magnifica’ Zamorano via announcement rather than directly following an in-ring success, in a classic on-brand boxing move.
