TERENCE CRAWFORD says a win over Errol Spence Jr would be “the cherry on top” of a career he already believes is hall of fame worthy.
On July 29 the two best welterweights in the world will finally square off after years of speculation.
At the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas either Spence or Crawford will rubber stamp their legacy in the sport.
This weekend Crawford held a hometown send-off in Omaha, Nebraska before setting off for training camp. The 35-year-old fielded some questions from the media which was captured by FightHype.
Crawford was asked if the fight against Spence was the most significant of his career.
“Well, one of them for sure,” he answered.
“This is for the supremacy of the welterweight division. You’ve got two top pound-for-pound fighters in their prime. This is one of those fights where it’s a pick em’ fight in everybody’s eyes and maybe one of the biggest fights in the last decade.”
A win for Crawford would see him officially declared as not only the best welterweight in the world but the best fighter in the world as well. His is a career that began at lightweight and has taken him through super-lightweight to 147lbs with multiple belts added to his collection.
“I’m very comfortable with my career right now,” he said.
“I feel like I already accomplished a hall of fame career. I’m happy with where I’m at but I’ll be satisfied once this job is done. I would say this is the cherry on top.”
Spence is seen as the bigger man going into the fight. The more natural at the weight but also one who could easily move to super-welterweight given his size.
“In my eyes all my life I’ve been a smaller guy, but I was always the strongest guy but come fight night we’ll see,” said Crawford.
Media conferences of any kind usually involve the word ‘statement’ and Crawford was asked if he was aiming to make one next month.
“Every fight I’m always looking to make a statement,” he said.
“Every time I set foot in the ring I want to make a statement and yes July 29 I’ll be looking to make a statement.”
