60 second interview: Nathan Farrell

Nick Bond talks to Nathan Farrell, a man who came agonisingly close to winning a bet

60 second interview: Nathan Farrell
Kieran Farrell (R) in action against Anthony Crolla

When and why you started boxing:

I started when I was 13. I was picked for the Lancashire county darts team and needed to shift some weight. But then I ended up leaving darts to compete in boxing.

Favourite all-time fighter:

From a boxing point of view, it’s Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker. He’s someone who I’ve studied a lot and have taken a lot from in terms of my own style.

Best fight you’ve seen:

I’ve seen many great ones, but the second Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight is a favourite of mine.

Personal career highlight:

Being an undefeated national amateur champion.

Toughest opponent:

Darren Tetley from Bradford. He’s 18-0 as a pro now. He had a bloody face and I gave him a count as well, but he just wouldn’t give in. He’s a very tough lad.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

I’m an all-rounder. I have a high boxing IQ, I can counterpunch or I can stand and fight. They tell me I have good power, too. You’d be hard-pressed to pinpoint a clear weakness of mine.

Training tip:

Don’t overdo it, especially in professional boxing.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

When I’m eating out, I like to get a T-bone steak with chips, cauliflower cheese and garlic bread. I prefer my dad’s cooking, though!

Best friends in boxing:

Everyone at Premier Boxing Club in Bolton and Glyn Rhodes MBE’s Sheffield Boxing Center.

Other sportsman you would like to be:

I wouldn’t want to be any other sportsman, but I admire the greats like Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Phil Taylor and many more.

Last film/TV show you saw:

The film, Good Will Hunting, starring Matt Damon and Robin Williams. A lesson in life!

Who would play you in a film of your life:

Tom Hardy, although I’m not sure if he’s good-looking enough to play the role!

Have you ever been starstruck:

When WWE superstar The Big Show waved at me outside Manchester Arena.

Last time you cried:

About 20 minutes ago when the horse I’d bet on lost on a photo finish!

Best advice received:

People say a lot, so just watch what they do.

Worst rumour about yourself:

Never heard one.

Something not many people know about you:

I give to charity as much as my pocket allows me to.
