Miriam Gutierrez: ‘Katie Taylor’s speed is brutal’
Mark Robinson

When and why you started boxing:
I started doing full contact karate when I was 14 years old, but I had to stop when I tore my abductor muscle. After this, I decided to start boxing because I wanted to continue doing a combat sport. I was a bit embarrassed at the beginning because all of the other people at the gym were male, but I soon got over it!

Favourite all-time fighter:
Mike Tyson. His upper-body movement was incredible, as was his punching power.

Best fight you’ve seen:
Claressa Shields vs Hanna Gabriels was a war. Both fighters gave it everything and I’d love to see a rematch one day. I also loved my fight with Katie Taylor [l ud 10 – November 2020]!

Personal career highlight:
Outside of boxing, I work in the municipality of Torrejón de Ardoz as a councillor. I’m proud of the work that I do in the Women’s Council for Women’s Rights. I offer help, support and guidance to women who are suffering or who have suffered from gender violence.

Toughest opponent:
I’ve always had a lot of admiration for Katie Taylor, so I was very nervous when I fought her. Her speed is brutal.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My best attributes are that I’m committed and persistent – I never give up! My worst is that I can get angry very easily, including with myself.

Training tip:
Fight for what you want, as you can achieve anything that you set your mind to.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
I like to get a tomahawk steak from Dabiz Muñoz’s GoXO.

Best friends in boxing:
Eva María Naranjo and [kickboxer] Iman Chairi are like sisters to me. And I’m a great admirer of Soralla Sánchez’s career.

Other sportsperson you would like to be:
Rafael Nadal because he enjoys every match that he plays.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
An actress with charisma who enjoys what she does. Someone like Maggie Civantos, for example.

Have you ever been starstruck:
I was starstruck when my two children were born and I got to see their faces for the first time.

Last time you cried:
I get emotional when I see my children overcome challenges and achieve their goals, especially when they say that I’ve inspired them in some way. They know that if their mother can do it, they can too.

Best advice received:
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.

Worst rumour about yourself:
Some people think that I’ve changed, but I’ll always be the same, no matter what.

Something not many people know about you:
It’s a secret!
