Liam Cameron reveals contractual dispute ahead of Ben Whittaker rematch

LIAM Cameron claims that attempts have been made to change his eagerly anticipated rematch with Ben Whittaker, originally scheduled for 12 rounds, to a 10-round contest.

The pair squared off in a controversial encounter last October, when Olympic silver medallist Whittaker, 8-0-1 (5 KOs), was introduced to his first acid test as a professional.

Through five rounds, the 27-year-old struggled to negate the relentlessness of Cameron, 23-6-1 (10 KOs), whose experience and polished fundamentals ultimately proved more than effective.

Then, before each of them knew what was happening, they were both sent tumbling over the top rope in a simply stunning turn of events.

As a result, their contest was ruled a technical draw after Whittaker pulled out with an ankle injury, while his opponent, on the other hand, firmly believes that he quit.

In any case, the two British light-heavyweights will get the chance to settle their score on April 20, topping a Boxxer bill at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England.

As to whether it is scheduled for 12 or 10 rounds, however, remains unclear, with Cameron having suggested that Whittaker’s team are keen to select the latter option.

“There is a mess about with the contracts that nobody is letting me speak about, so I’m going to try on here,” Cameron told talkSPORT.

“We have signed for a 12-round fight, and they [Whittaker’s team] are trying to push it for a 10 rounder, doing everything that they can, and I’m not budging.

“When I was signing the contract, I thought, ‘he could barely get through five rounds. This is weird’.

“So a couple of weeks went by, and they tried to send another contract for a 10 rounder. That shows the confidence levels, I’m ready for 15 rounds.”

The 34-year-old also added that Queensberry Promotions boss Frank Warren, his promoter, refuses to change the terms that were originally agreed upon in their contract.

Either way, their sequel should deliver an intriguing spectacle on Easter Sunday, with Whittaker hoping to remind fans that he is, in fact, a future star of the sport.

Boxxer were contacted for a comment.
