Kenshiro Teraji distances himself from a potential showdown with Galal Yafai

KENSHIRO Teraji is set to swerve newly-crowned WBC interim flyweight titlist Galal Yafai in pursuit of an all-Japanese unification.

‘The Amazing Boy’ comes off an 11th-round stoppage victory over seasoned operator Cristofer Rosales, claiming the vacant WBC crown at 112 lbs.

Before that, Teraji amassed 13 title defences to cement his dominance at light flyweight, while also avenging his only professional defeat to Masamichi Yabuki with an emphatic third-round finish.

It was down at 108 lbs, too, where the 32-year-old unified his division after dethroning WBA champion Hiroto Kyoguchi with a scintillating performance back in 2022.

But now, it has been reported that Teraji is targeting a showdown with WBA flyweight champion Seigo Yuri Akui.

Jake Donovan wrote on X earlier today that the mouth-watering unification is set to take place in March, with the two Japanese sensations headlining a card in Tokyo.

This, however, could force Yafai to consider alternative options for his first outing of 2025.

The 32-year-old comes off a stunning sixth-round stoppage victory over former world champion Sunny Edwards, announcing himself on the world stage with arguably a career-best performance.

In doing so, Yafai also claimed the WBC interim title, putting himself in a strong position to face Teraji at some point this year.

But still, while the Brit expressed his desire to become a world champion following his victory over Edwards, he equally insisted that there is no rush to accelerate his progression.

And so, as Teraji looks to secure more jewellery in his quest to become the undisputed flyweight king, Yafai may be forced to wait in the wings for a short while longer.
