FORMER world title challenger Hughie Fury has sent a stern warning to his fellow heavyweight contenders, insisting that they can only keep avoiding him for so long.
Following a prolonged spell of inactivity, the 30-year-old returned to the ring with three victories against relatively limited opposition last year.
But now, after appearing on Izzy Asif’s GBM Sports cards, the Brit has signed a multi-fight deal with the rising promotional outfit ahead of his next assignment on April 4.
It is easy to forget that Fury, 29-3 (16 KOs), entered his first world title shot back in 2017, losing a scrappy 12-round affair to Joseph Parker.
After that, the awkward customer toppled British champion Sam Sexton with an emphatic fifth-round stoppage victory, only to lose on points to Kubrat Pulev later that year.
His third blemish then arrived against Alexander Povetkin in 2019, forcing Fury to reassess his credentials at fringe world level.
Sure enough, with his most notable wins coming against faded veterans Christian Hammer and Mariusz Wach, it is fair to say that the Mancunian has remained a far cry from the world title scene.
And yet, with Fury now looking to extend his new-found activity, it appears that he is keen to take on some of his division’s most fearsome operators.
“I’ve enjoyed working with GBM and I am excited to be signing this multi-fight deal,” he said in a press release.
“I’ve been constantly in the gym and I’m coming for all these so-called top heavyweights soon.
“They can’t avoid me much longer and I’m going to spoil their day in the sun. I’m going to be busy this year and whoever wants it can have it. Call my team – I will be there!”
Fury’s next fight will take place at the York Hall in London, England, with a second outing already being lined up for May.
And so, while an opponent is yet to be announced, the contender’s father and trainer, Peter Fury, will undoubtedly have his hands full.
