Gervonta Davis’ showdown with Lamont Roach is given more clarity amid cancellation rumours

GERVONTA ‘Tank’ Davis is still expected to face Lamont Roach on March 1, despite indicating on social media that their showdown has instead been cancelled.

The 30-year-old comes off an emphatic victory over slick southpaw Frank Martin, producing a stunning eighth-round knockout to retain his WBA lightweight title back in June.

Since then, fans have been clamouring for a unification between the pound-for-pound star and WBC titlist Shakur Stevenson, a mouth-watering matchup that has now been added to everyone’s 2025 Wishlist.

And so, the announcement that Davis will instead be facing Roach – the reigning WBA super featherweight champion – did little to whet the appetite of boxing aficionados.

Nevertheless, the pair are seemingly set to lock horns at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, headlining a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view show on Amazon Prime.

The event, however, appeared to be in jeopardy after ‘Tank’ took to Instagram on December 23, claiming that his fight with Roach had been cancelled, before deleting his story soon after.

While no further details on the situation have emerged, veteran boxing reporter Dan Rafael has insisted that the lightweight clash will, in fact, still take place.

“PBC official told me day or two ago it is still on,” he wrote on X yesterday.

Regardless, Davis’ bizarre activity on social media has only added more concern over the future of his career.

The Brooklyn-born bruiser has, after all, announced that he plans to retire from the sport by the end of this year, leaving fans with little to get excited for.
