BELFAST stylist Sean McComb is set to end his lengthy absence from the ring and itโs all down to a new promotional link-up. The southpaw has inked a deal with fast-rising GBM Sports. His first outing will come on June 28 in Galway. The opponent will be named in due course.
McComb has been vocal in the past about the brutal nature of the boxing industry as he tried to carve out fresh opportunities. Such was the stagnant frustration of inactivity, Sean admitted that a rematch with Arnold Barboza Jr. could wait, and merely returning to the ring was the immediate aim.
That Barboza fight could and should have been a breakthrough moment for โThe Public Nuisanceโ, who appeared to outbox the Californian for long spells of their April 2024 meeting. One of the judges agreed, scoring the 10-rounder 98-92 in his favour. Overruled by the remaining two judges, who went 97-93 and 96-94 in the other direction.
That was the last time McComb, 18-2 (5 KOs), was seen in the ring. Now he will be hoping that his Pearse Stadium rust-shedder is the start of something big. Since turning professional in 2018, McComb has fitted in 20 fights, often falling between the promotional cracks of boxingโs ever-changing landscape.
Bouncing back from a 2021 knockout loss to Gavin Gwynne, winning and defending the WBO European super-lightweight belt led to the Barboza chance and a controversial loss. A smooth left-hander, with sprightly movement and punch accuracy, McComb has one more run left in him to get back towards the top.
