AT just 22 years old, Floyd Schofield, 18-0 (12 KOs), is undoubtedly one of the hottest prospects in the lightweight division. The youngster has been heaped with praise after accepting the opportunity to challenge Shakur Stevenson, 23-0 (11 KOs), for the WBC world title.
However, that anticipated February meeting was canceled during fight week, with Josh Padley replacing Schofield and going on to lose via ninth-round stoppage, leaving “Kid Austin” in the dark. Now, the undefeated 135-pounder has revealed a date for his return to action.
Schofield debuted professionally after a stellar amateur career, boasting a reported record of 180-20 and numerous titles. That success has continued in the professional ranks, where he has risen to world title contention, currently ranked as the #2 contender with the WBA.
Yet, Schofieldโs chance to pull off a tremendous upset and truly prove his quality was taken away in February when illness forced him out of an all-American clash against the highly regarded WBC lightweight champion, Stevenson, significantly derailing his plans to shake up the 135-pound scene.
Two months later, Schofield has broken his silence and taken to Instagram to confirm that he will make his ring return at the end of June, promising to deliver for his fans:
“We fight soon, hopefully at the end of June. I canโt wait to put on a show for you guys because itโs been too long since Iโve been in that ring. Iโm excited, and I just want to thank everybody who stayed loyal and all of the supporters. I got yโall, weโre going to have fun, so letโs get it!”
The Texas-based contender continues to face criticism from those who doubt the severity of the illness that caused his withdrawal, and he will be eager to prove the naysayers wrong during the remainder of 2025, where an eventual grudge match with Stevenson could still be on the cards.
