AUSTIN ‘Ammo’ Williams has a 12-round contest against Patrice Volny to deal with in Orlando tonight, as the middleweight prospect looks to move back up to contender status after suffering his first career defeat.
Williams (5/11) bounced back from his defeat to Hamzah Sheeraz with a fifth-round stoppage win over Gian Garrido in November, but had to battle through a couple of tricky moments. Volny (17/10) is taking a step-up in quality but has scored a couple of solid recent wins, first stopping fringe operator DeAndre Ware and then former world title challenger Steven Butler.
Speaking at the midweek press conference, Williams has arrived in a confident mood: “You’ll see what a true professional champion really is by the way he speaks, the way he walks and the way he can connect with people.
“There is no disconnection between a world champion and the people. I could walk amongst people just like anyone else and I’m not better than anyone up here. I have taken sacrifices and I have the platform to help the world,” he said.
Williams might have his hands full early on, but his speed, power and athleticism are likely to tell as the bout wears on. Canada’s Volny, 35, will do well to hear the final bell.
