BOXERS go through long periods of nutritional manipulation, often having specific macronutrient amount they have to meet. It can therefore be hard to find foods and liquids that represent these nutritional sources and can offer the right amount of macros. Milk (either on its own or as chocolate milk) offers great amounts of nutrients that can aid a boxer during different types of training and competition preparation. So let’s take a look at the top four reasons milk is helpful to a fighter.

1. Protein

CHOCOLATE milk is a fantastic source of casein-based protein, which means it releases its amino acids slowly and is therefore a perfect pre-sleep recovery option for boxers. 500ml of supermarket-bought chocolate milk can contains over 21g of protein.

2. Hydration

HYDRATION is key, and becomes even more important after a short dehydration phase pre-weigh-in. Milk is arguably a better hydration source for the body than commercially available sports drinks or even plain water. This is due to the large amount of sodium and potassium in milk that enables better restoration of the body’s fluid balance.

3. Carbohydrates

FOLLOWING a weigh-in, ‘carb-loading’ is vitally important to make sure a boxer enters the ring with as much stored energy as possible. Chocolate milk contains over 60g of carbohydrate in every 500ml. All of the carbs in chocolate milk are high-GI, which means they are rapidly digested and stored in the body – the winning combination following a weigh-in!

4. Calcium

CALORIE restriction can cause problems with bone health, leading to frail and weak bones. Chocolate milk contains over 600mg of calcium per 500ml – which is roughly 60 per cent of your recommended daily allowance. Consuming chocolate milk is therefore going to aid in improving and maintaining a boxer’s bone health during periods of calorie restriction and training.
