The form of Frankie Gavin and Kevin Johnson could unlock a fortune

There's some very inviting odds on the Brook-Gavin and Joshua-Johnson showdowns

Matt Christie

29th May, 2015

FRANKIE GAVIN goes into today’s showdown with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook as a huge underdog, but some educated minds are picking the Birmingham man to spring the upset.

The welterweight has lost only once as a professional – a tighter than tight points loss to world class Leonard Bundu last year – and was once one of the brightest prospects in boxing after a brilliant amateur career. Not a revered puncher but an exceptional boxer, Gavin tends to fight to the level of his opponents. As a consequence, his talents are often underrated and are perhaps reflected by the long odds of 6-1 on him emerging victorious at the O2.

Those are long odds indeed for a two-horse race, and when one of the horses is Gavin, he’s worth backing. Perhaps even better value is the 10-1 BETWAY offer on a Frankie points victory. The Midlander doesn’t appear to have the punch to halt Brook, but has enough skills to make life difficult and potentially eke out the victory on points.

The value does not stop there. Elsewhere on the bill is the heavyweight collision between unbeaten puncher Anthony Johnson and ever-reliable gatekeeper, Kevin Johnson.

The Londoner has obliterated all 12 of his opponents so far without breaking sweat, and many expect Johnson to go the same way. However, the American import has never been stopped and has gone in with the likes of Vitali Klitschko, Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora. He always talks a good game and survival has become his key strength so a 10-round points win for Joshua is completely plausible, and at 4-1, well worth a punt.
