DALTON Smith and Mathieu Germain square off in Sheffield on Saturday evening, in a fight where maximum concentration is needed to reach that next level unscathed. Smith knows that a lot is riding on beating Germain. A world title shot would be in severe jeopardy were he to suffer a first defeat.
Smith (1/14) is a solid favourite to get past the Canadian and move on to claim his crack at Alberto Puello, the WBC champion at 140 pounds.
Smith looked impressive last time out, blasting away overmatched Frenchman Walid Ouizza in a round. Germain (8/1) should provide a much tougher test than that. That said, they’ve not been matched for Dalton to lose. This is supposed to be one final step before the big one.
Germain has a decent victory over Steve Claggett, but a couple of stoppage defeats on the ledger. Dalton Smith will likely make that three KO losses. The Sheffield man should look good, sending out a message to Puello in the process.
