On This Day: One-armed Danny Williams scores scarcely believable KO victory over Mark Potter

DANNY WILLIAMS w ko 6 MARK POTTER
October 21, 2000; Wembley Conference Centre, London
WHEN asked about his proudest moment in a boxing ring, Danny Williams will not name the moment he beat Mike Tyson or the night he fought for the world heavyweight title. It’s when he dislocated his right arm in round three and flattened Mark Potter with his left in the sixth. “When you’re in there you don’t really think of it, but seeing the shocked and amazed faces you start to realise,” Williams told BN of his truly heroic victory. “The papers were all saying it was like something out of a Rocky film, but if it happened in Rocky, you’d say the story was ridiculous!”

DID YOU KNOW? This was not the only bad injury overcome on the card. Topping the bill was Ricky Hatton, who survived a horror cut that opened in the first round, to decision Jon Thaxton over 12.

WATCH OUT FOR: The state of Williams’ arm as it hangs limply from his shoulder. Then try to imagine how that felt. That he put up with the discomfort for three rounds before halting Potter with his only working arm is still barely believable.
