LIAM Davies headlines in the Resorts World Arena, Birmingham, tonight, looking to defend his IBO super-bantamweight title and get one over old amateur rival Shabaz Masoud.

Davies (10/3) is promising a knockout and has become quite the finisher as a professional. Masoud (5/2) is a silky operator on his day but has blown hot and cold since turning over in 2018. Liam Davies has had to make do with winning the IBO as a follow-up to the “traditional route”, as all belts at 122 pounds rest in the capable arms of Naoya Inoue.

Both men are undefeated, but the momentum and form guide favour Davies, who has been dealing with a higher level of opponent. If Masoud can get into a rhythm and let the shots fly from either stance, he could give Davies plenty to think about, particularly early on.

Davies has blasted away Erik Robles Ayala, Vincenzo La Femina and Jason Cunningham. On the other hand, Masoud’s wins over Diego Ruiz, Yoann Boyeaux, and Jack Bateson have faded from recent memory. The journeymen fare he’s been chewing up lately is not ideal preparation for someone like Davies.

Masoud’s speed and reflexes can make things interesting for the first third of the fight, with the weather getting progressively heavier as the rounds skip by. After the middle half and into the final portion is Davies’ territory. He can pin down Masoud to force a stoppage.
