Some cornermen can change a fight – others can change a career. Andy Lee belongs in the latter category.
The Limerick man’s influence has been key in the resurgence of Joseph Parker and the rise of Paddy Donovan, guiding both from the shadows to the spotlight of their respective divisions. Now, Lee is tasked with steering the career of Hamzah Sheeraz, who makes his debut at super-middleweight this Saturday night.
Sheeraz’s chapter at 168lbs begins with a serious test – a confident, heavy-handed Edgar Berlanga, whose self-belief and aggression often make up for what he lacks in finesse. This is also Sheeraz’s first camp under Lee, making the performance even more intriguing.
The bout takes place at an unusual setting for a boxing match: the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York, better known for hosting U.S. Open tennis. Berlanga (23/20) may not have the nimbleness of a tennis player, but he carries power and pressure in both hands — and that’s where Sheeraz (20/29) must be smart. Playing into the New Yorker’s rhythm could be a costly mistake. That’s where Lee’s experience, fight IQ, and calming presence in the corner could be invaluable.
Once upon a time, Berlanga looked like boxing’s newest wrecking ball – scoring 16 consecutive first-round knockouts to start his career. But as soon as he stepped up against more durable opposition, such as Marcelo Coceres, cracks began to show. Since those early blitzes, Berlanga has stopped just two of his last eight opponents. While he gave a spirited effort in his points loss to Canelo Alvarez, the result felt inevitable as early as the opening few rounds.
Sheeraz, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance against Carlos Adames. The WBC middleweight champion deserved the nod, exposing Sheeraz’s struggles with physicality and pace. Moving up to 168lbs should allow the Brit to box with more freedom – no more draining weight cuts, no more rigid performances. Sheeraz can punch, but whether that power translates fully to super-middleweight remains to be seen.
Both men have a point to prove in a division ruled by Canelo, and with potential title shots dangling in the distance, the stakes are high. Berlanga’s upright stance, limited footwork, and telegraphed attacks could suit Sheeraz, who has the range and jab to dictate from the outside. If he can bank early rounds behind that stick, he may open the door for clean uppercuts and body shots later in the fight.
With Lee’s voice in his corner, expect Sheeraz to stay disciplined early and grow in confidence down the stretch. A stoppage is possible, but the smarter money may be on a clear and composed points win.
