Amir Khan favourite to beat Kell Brook

Khan being tipped to beat Brook on points should the British stars collide

Amir Khan favourite to beat Kell Brook

BOX OFFICE events are rare in British boxing in the sense they come along only two or three times a year.

Few are universally welcomed but there is one battle of Britain that would appeal to even the most cynical boxing fan; welterweights Kell Brook and Amir Khan coming together in a superfight would – given their obvious mutual dislike and respective abilities – be a showdown capable of generating the gargantuan interest Carl Froch and George Groves enjoyed.

Floyd Mayweather’s presence as the undisputed 147lb leader remains the primary reason why Brook-Khan has not happened yet. Amir has made it clear for a long time that the unbeaten American superstar is his No.1 target and, while Brook initially actively chased his countryman, the IBF champion also craves the lucrative Mayweather showdown.

However, it still seems likely that Brook and Khan, whether or not either get their shot at Floyd, will meet in a huge domestic showdown at some point in the not too distant future.

Odds are currently available on the outcome, and might tempt punters looking for value. Currently, Khan is listed as an 8/15 favourite, with the unbeaten and improving Brook attracting odds of 8/5. Should Khan lose to Mayweather and then challenge Brook, it’s likely those odds will change. In short, if you believe Brook will beat Khan, now is the time to put your money where your mouth is.

Betway have taken note of Khan’s form at welterweight where knockouts have been hard to come by. Although he appears to be at his physical peak, his punch potency has diminished at the higher weight and the odds on Amir halting Brook (or winning by disqualification) are long at 4/1, with a much smaller price – 1/1 – on Khan winning on points.

Brook, meanwhile, appears to be the harder puncher at welterweight and given Khan’s susceptible whiskers is worth a punt at 11/4 on winning inside schedule. The same odds are offered for the Sheffield switch-hitter claiming victory on points and 25/1 on the draw (always worth considering).
