10 fights infected or likely to be infected by the coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the sporting world hard and boxing has experienced a number of postponements in recent weeks

10 fights infected or likely to be infected by the coronavirus

1. Daniel Dubois vs. Joe Joyce

This all-British heavyweight showdown was meant to happen on April 11 at London’s O2 Arena but was scrapped the moment the British Boxing Board of Control suspended all boxing events in the UK until May. It will now be rescheduled for July 11.

2. Regis Prograis vs Maurice Hooker

Set for April 17, Prograis vs. Hooker, an intriguing non-title bout, was cancelled on March 16 when the Center for Disease Control (CDC) made their recommendation that there should be no gatherings of 50 people or more.

3. Naoya Inoue vs. John Riel Casimero

Any hope of this brilliant battle between Inoue, the WBA and IBF bantamweight champion, and Casimero, the WBO champion, taking place on April 25 was shot down the moment Top Rank became one of the first to announce they were chucking out their schedules for March and April.

4. Dillian Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin

Still set for May 2, Whyte is away training for the fight in Portugal but admits he isn’t sure whether it will still go ahead. It’s an uncertain time for both him and Povetkin and the chance of this fight taking place on its original date appears extremely small.

5. Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders

A WBO super-middleweight title fight between Alvarez and Saunders, the champion, on May 2 hadn’t even been announced when it was called off with Saunders in Las Vegas to make it formal. He has since stayed out there to train but it appears his opportunity has now gone.

6. Jose Carlos Ramirez vs Viktor Postol

This fight between Ramirez and Postol was originally supposed to take place in China in February but has since been shifted to Fresno, California on May 9. Chances are, it ends up having to be moved again.

7. Yuniel Dorticos vs. Mairis Briedis

It’s been a long road for World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight finallists Dorticos and Briedis and they’re going to have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the Muhammad Ali trophy. Their March 21 date has been pushed back to May 16 and even that seems ambitious with each day that passes.

8. Nordine Oubaali vs. Nonito Donaire

This WBC bantamweight title fight, set for May 16, is another one still going ahead, though it remains to be seen if it will stay that way as the rate of infection – and therefore the pressure on people to do the right thing – increases.

9. Oleksandr Usyk vs. Dereck Chisora

Because this fight takes place at the back end of May, on the 28th, there’s a small chance that it will go ahead. But it still seems very unlikely Usyk’s first test as a heavyweight will happen on May 28.

10. Anthony Joshua vs. Kubrat Pulev

Though this one is still a way off, it already seems ambitious and perhaps misguided to assume a June 20 heavyweight title showdown between Anthony Joshua and his mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev will go ahead as intended. The world will look very different by that time and a mandatory title defence will be the least of anyone’s worries.
