UNBEATEN light-heavyweight contender Ezra Taylor has revealed his next opponent after exchanging barbs with British and Commonwealth champion Lewis Edmondson.
The domestic rivals came face-to-face at todayโs weigh-in, building excitement around their potential showdown ahead of Edmondsonโs dustup with Oluwatosin Kejawa tomorrow night.
Featuring on the undercard of Ryan Garner vs Salvador Jimenez, ‘The Saint’ will make the first defence of his Commonwealth strap at the BIC in Bournemouth, England.
Edmondson, 10-0 (3 KOs), outpointed Dan Azeez with a majority decision victory last October, and despite claiming the Lonsdale Belt, his coveted title is not on the line against Kejawa.
Nevertheless, Taylor, 10-0 (7 KOs), has firmly set his sights on Edmondsonโs jewellery, hoping that their possible grudge match can materialise later this year.
The pair have, after all, gone back-and-forth over social media for quite some time โ and today, they finally had the chance to size each other up.
โIt was good to see that t*** [Edmondson] in the flesh,โ Taylor told Boxing News.
โI looked him in his eyes and saw everything I needed to see. He was saying [he wants to] fight me on May 10, and I said, โletโs do it.โ
โI was actually meant to fight him tomorrow, believe it or not. Ask him why he’s defending the Commonwealth [title] and not the British title โ [itโs] because heโs scared.
โIf he wants to fight me on May 10, Iโll invite it. If not, Iโll get myself into the mandatory position to fight for the British title.โ
Despite targeting a mouth-watering clash with Edmondson, Taylor has revealed to Boxing News that his next opponent is already lined up.
The 30-year-old will, in fact, face fellow undefeated operator Troy Jones on May 10, appearing on the undercard of Anthony Cacace vs Leigh Wood.
Not only that but, as well as returning to his home city of Nottingham for the first time since 2020, Taylor is set to secure the co-main event slot.
But while he remains focused on Jones, โThe Cannonโ has nonetheless welcomed Edmondson to step in as an alternative opponent.
โIโm happy for that fight to get changed,โ he said. โMy opponent may not be too happy, but I am. Or I could fight [Edmondson] in July โ Iโve heard rumours of a show happening in that month.โ
In any case, a collision between Queensberry Promotions fighters Taylor and Edmondson โ who, of course, must first get past Kejawa โ looks to be the obvious matchup.
