Eubank Jr poised for world title shot after Benn rematch

A REMATCH between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn could take place before the end of September. The bitter rivals clashed on April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where, after a tempestuous build-up, Eubank, 35-3 (25 KOs), and Benn, 23-1 (14 KOs), delivered a Fight of the Year contender.

After 12 hard-fought rounds, Eubank emerged victorious by unanimous decision. Their rivalry looks set to continue, with Eubankโ€™s manager, Elliott Amoakoh, revealing to talkSPORT that September 27 is the targeted date. Amoakoh confirmed that, following discussions with Eubank, his client made it clear who he wants next.

“I’ve had conversations with Chris, presented some fighters to him and the fight he wants next is Conor Benn,” Amoakoh said.

Should Eubank secure back-to-back wins against Benn, a shot at the undisputed super-middleweight title could follow, thanks to Saudi deal-maker Turki Alalshikh.

“Hopefully Canelo gets through Terence Crawford, we get through Conor Benn and then they’ll do it next. So that’s the negotiations that’s going on right now.”

“Turki promised it to us,” Amoakoh added.

“If Chris Eubank Jr comes through that, Eubank Jr-Canelo, here we go. That’s what we want, we get through Conor Benn and then we want Canelo.”

Eubank hasnโ€™t competed at super-middleweight since February 2019, when he defeated a past-his-prime James DeGale. Since then, the Brighton boxer has won seven of his last eight contests, his only loss coming against Liam Smith in January 2023, which he avenged eight months later.

The 35-year-old celebrates his next birthday on September 18, nine days before the potential rematch date. Despite having fought 38 times over 14 years, Eubank has yet to claim one of the four recognised world titles. He held the WBA Interim middleweight belt in 2015 and regained it in 2019. However, his sole world title challenge ended in defeat to WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves in February 2018.
