ERIK SKOGLUND has been placed in a medically induced coma. The world class Swedish fighter was taken ill after a training session on Friday (December 7) and treated in hospital for a bleed on the brain.
Last September Skoglund boxed Callum Smith for the WBC Diamond super-middleweight title in the quarter-final of the World Boxing Super Series.
His promoters, the Sauerland brothers said in a statement: “Erik was taken to hospital yesterday having felt ill after a training session in his hometown. He was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent surgery last night to repair a bleed on the brain. Doctors are pleased with the results and Erik remains in a serious yet stable condition. The next three to four days are critical for his recovery.”
They noted, “During this time, we ask that everyone respect the privacy of Erik and his family. We will communicate further information when it becomes available.”
Sauerland added that they were “heartbroken”.
Callum Smith said, “Thoughts and prayers are with Erik Skoglund and his family. Wishing him a speedy recovery.”
World champion George Groves, who knows Skoglund and part of the World Boxing Super Series himself, said, “So sad and deeply concerning to hear the news Erik Skoglund has fallen ill and is in a medically induced coma. He is such a nice guy, thoughts are with his family and team.”
