England versus Scotland as their super-heavyweight champions Joe Joyce and Ross Henderson collide

ENGLAND’S “Iron Giant” Joe Joyce will lock horns with Scotland’s Ross Henderson today (July 29) at the Commonwealth Games. The two have boxed before and Joyce dominated then. But Henderson looked much improved when he outscored India’s Parveen Parveen to reach this super-heavyweight quarter-final. Joe has an unfortunate habit of letting too many shots through but compensates with an iron jaw and relentless workrate. Henderson will have the home crowd to buoy him and keep this collision interesting. It’s set to go off at about 2.15pm.

The upsetter, Scottish flyweight Reece McFadden is back in action, at approximately 1.30pm, against Oteng Oteng, who won a bronze medal at the last Commonwealth Games.

English lightweight Natasha Jonas will have her first bout of the Commonwealth Games, against Australia’s Shelley Watts at about 3.15pm. Welsh 60kgs Charlene Jones boxes at about 4pm against Hansika Arachchi, from Sri Lanka.

Rising Welsh star Joe Cordina, 60kgs, is the first bout of the evening session, taking on New Zealand’s strong Chad Milnes at 6.30pm. Scottish lightweight Charlie Flynn goes in with Ghana’s Jessie Lartey at 6.45pm in another 60kgs quarter-final. There are two quality 64kgs contests back-to-back at 7.30pm, England’s Sam Maxwell against India’s Manoj Kumar and it’s Scotland versus Wales when Josh Taylor have boxes Zack Davies. Kumar is relentless and Maxwell will have to keep his guard up and pick out the openings that will come his way. Davies is strong, likes to come forward and throw hard shots. Taylor has been performing with flair and slick movement. He can land a hurtful punch too. Their styles should blend well. The victors of these two bouts will box one another in the semi-final.

Welsh middleweight Lauren Price boxes Theresa London, from Guyana, at roughly 10pm. World championship gold medallist Savannah Marshall makes her first Glasgow 2014 appearance, against India’s Pooja Rani at approximately 10.30pm.
