BOTH Hughie Fury and Dillian Whyte are heavyweights eager to return to the division’s peak and regain a world ranking. Both of these Brits have dropped out of the picture over the last couple of years.
Ahead of his fight tomorrow night, Fury, 29-3 (16 KOs), revealed yesterday that he and his team are in discussions to stage a clash with fellow fringe world-level contender Whyte, 31-3 (21 KOs), in Galway. Now, โThe Body Snatcherโ has spoken out in response.
Fury, cousin of two-time heavyweight champion and Dillian Whyte dominator, Tyson, ended a two-and-a-half-year spell of inactivity last year after overcoming his prolonged battle with long-COVID.
In an attempt to regain momentum, the 30-year-old fought three times during 2024, outpointing both Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko and Christian Thun before knocking out Patrick Korte. Friday sees Fury appear for the first time this calendar, scheduled to take on Dan Garber, 9-4 (2 KOs), at York Hall.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Fury looked ahead to the fight but admitted that he is eyeing scraps against the biggest names in Britain. He declared that talks are underway for a showdown with Whyte, touted to take place in Ireland this July.
โAfter this fight he said that I am going to be headlining in Galway, and he said that there is a possibility that itโd be [against] Dillian Whyte. So thatโd be a big fight there.โ
However, 36-year-old Whyte laughed off those claims on social media, insinuating that the fight had not been mentioned to him at all.
โHahahahaha, that is news to me. I think heโs been hit too hard.โ
Whyte has yet to fight on the big stage since failing a drugs test in 2023, which led to the cancellation of his rematch with Anthony Joshua that summer. The Brixton-based big man was scheduled to take on Joe Joyce in Manchester this weekend until withdrawing due to injury.
As for Fury, his scrap with Garber will be available to watch live on DAZN tonight, as a part of the Dos Santos-Rea undercard. It seems as though suggestions that Whyte will be next are wide of the mark.
