THE light-heavyweight debut of David Morrell didn’t catch the eye following his points win against Radivoje Kalajdzic.
Predictions beforehand had the Cuban winning inside the distance but the stubborn Serbian proved to be a difficult man to shift. Morrell’s 90 percent KO ratio was expected to travel from super-middleweight to light-heavyweight but Kalajdzic never looked like going the way of Yamaguchi Falcao, Alantez Fox and the seven other Morrell opponents who couldn’t stand up to his power.
The 118-110 and two cards of 117-111 were fair reflections of a bout which didn’t have the fireworks we’ve come to associate Morrell with.
“The opponent was strong but I feel good,” Morrell said post-fight.
“It’s [David] Benavidez, I want him,” the Cuban added. “Everyone said Benavidez is the bogeyman. I’m here, I ain’t scared.”
